Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964. She is an American politician. Harris is the first vice president to be female and highest-ranking female official of U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. As a part of the Democratic Party, she previously served as the attorney general for California from 2011 to 2017 and was an United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After starting her career as an Alameda County District Attorney, Harris was recruited to San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In the following years, she was the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003, she was elected the city's district attorney. She was elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and was elected again in 2014. Harris was the junior United States Senate from California from 2017-2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the second African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. Harris was a senator and campaigned for reforms to healthcare and federal cannabis de-scheduling. She also advocated for an opportunity to become a citizen for immigrants who are not legally documented as well as the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile for her pointed questions of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual assault.
